AI website builder or a web designer?
Build it yourself with an AI builder if the site is a brochure: a few pages that say who you are and how to reach you. Hire someone once the site takes logins, payments or personal data, or once it has to bring enquiries and you need a person who owns that result. Owners and developers drew the same line this month.

What AI builders are good at now.
A simple site, fast. One beauty business owner posted on TikTok on 30 September that she had built her own site with AI in less than 72 hours. For a brochure site, that is a fair result for a weekend.
The mood among owners is split. A thread on r/smallbusiness titled "Is anyone else completely fed up with this new 'AI' software?" reached 310 points. Its top reply, with 187 upvotes, was u/Eznark saying the job described was "a simple task for a $20 a month codex/claude subscription". The second, with 123, was u/the_weird_days: "I'm so tired of Ai anything".
Where the line is.
On r/smallbusiness, a post about the vibe coding boom drew it: "A brochure site is one thing. A site where people create accounts, upload files, enter personal details, make payments, send private messages etc. is something completely different." The top reply, from u/Shiribazu: "the scary part is that a polished UI can hide a lot of insecure defaults underneath."
The numbers support the worry. Veracode tested more than 100 language models across Java, Python, C# and JavaScript, and 45% of the code samples failed security tests and introduced OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities.
| Your site | Route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few pages: who you are, what you do, how to reach you | AI builder or template | Low risk. Nothing to secure beyond the form. |
| Has to bring enquiries you can count | Hire for the offer, the proof and the measurement | The builder makes pages. It does not decide what the page should say or check whether it worked. |
| Logins, payments, bookings, personal data | Hire someone who can verify the security | Generated code can look finished and still be unsafe. |
| More than one language, or right to left | Hire, or budget real time for testing | Layout and wording both need a reader of each language. |
What you are paying a person for.
Not the code. On r/smallbusiness, u/Asly97, who has hired freelancers for years, wrote: "I don't hire a junior for the code. AI writes decent code now. I hire them for the judgment around the code." The people worth rehiring, in the same reply, are the ones who push back on a bad request, ask the clarifying question first, and own the outcome.
That is the fair test for any studio, ours included: what did they decide, what did they tell you not to build, and who answers when the form stops delivering?
What Kinetiq does.
| What | Time | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Audit: teardown, prioritised fix list, one rebuilt hero | One week | $2,500, credited in full to the build |
| Landing page | Two weeks | From $2,750 |
| Launch site | Four to six weeks | From $9,500 |
| Run: search and AI answers, measured monthly | Monthly | From $2,250 a month |
If a template would do the job, you'll hear that in the first reply. Every price is fixed before work starts and you own the code and design at launch. For what the market charges, see how much a website costs in 2026.
Questions.
Can I build my business website with AI?
Yes, if it is a brochure site: a few pages and a contact form. Owners are doing it in a weekend. The risk starts when the site takes logins, payments or personal data.
Is an AI-built website secure?
A brochure site has little to secure. For anything with accounts or payments, have someone check it: Veracode found that 45% of AI-generated code samples failed security tests.
What does a web designer do that an AI builder does not?
Decides what the page should say and to whom, tells you what not to build, and owns the result after launch. Owners who hire say they pay for judgment and accountability, since AI already writes decent code.
What does it cost to hire instead?
Published 2026 guides put a freelancer at $1,500 to $8,000 and an agency at $6,000 to $35,000. Kinetiq builds a landing page from $2,750 and a launch site from $9,500.
